Kidnapping
According to statistics, a child goes missing or is abducted in the United States every 40 seconds. Annually, around 840,000 children are reported missing, with 85-90% of these being children. Although most cases are resolved within hours, some involve situations where a child goes missing permanently or for an extended period. This presents several key issues surrounding missing and abducted children.
Human Trafficking
There are an estimated 40.3 million victims of human trafficking worldwide. Women and girls make up the majority of victims, accounting for 71% of all trafficking victims. The most common form of human trafficking is forced labor, which affects 24.9 million people. Sexual exploitation is the second most common form of trafficking, affecting 4.8 million people. Human trafficking generates an estimated $150 billion in illegal profits each year and occurs in every country, including the United States.
Runaway Teens
Each year, an estimated 1.6 to 2.8 million youth run away from home in the United States. Approximately 40% of runaway and homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+. Many runaway youth are fleeing abusive or unstable home environments, while others leave due to mental health issues or substance abuse. Runaway youth are at a higher risk of experiencing physical and sexual abuse, as well as exploitation and trafficking.
Bringing Them Home
The National Missing Persons Advocacy Association aims to raise awareness for missing persons through community outreach programs. Our goal is to provide education and training to adults and children on ways to avoid human trafficking and keep youth safe. We work closely with families to assist them in navigating the system during a critical oment when a loved one is reported missing.
